WHY DO WE DREAM?

Why do we Dream? What is the significance of it? This very question has kept us fascinated since the birth of humanity. The Mesopotamian viewed dreams as the message from God, which were then translated by a dream priest. The Egyptians also had similar views and thought dreams could be used to predict the future.

The realization that dreams may originate from human thoughts and emotion arguably first occurred in Ancient Greece; Hippocrates suggested that dreams might be related to mental and physical health.

Dreams have also led to many Scientific discoveries. Dmitri Mendeleev found a logical arrangement of the elements in the Periodic table in his dreams. The structure of benzene ring was found out by August Kekule also in a bizarre dream of a snake made of atoms biting its own tail.

Although the actual function of Dream is yet to be answered, there are many hypotheses speculated by different scientists.

One theory suggests that dreams are associated with memory formation and may play some role in the conversion of short-term memory into long-term.

Another theory says that our dreams probably are rehearsals of the events that we are expecting in near future. It allows us to prepare in advance for a potentially traumatic or important event acting as a simulation. For example, if you dream that you have come to give an important exam and have forgotten to bring your admit card, your subconscious mind is presenting your worst fears to convey you how you would react in the original scenario. So, it allows you to practice your fight or flight instinct.

Some scientists also say that we dream to heal and forget. While dreaming our brain dumps all the unnecessary information and also allows psychological healing.

Researchers have found out that we usually have several dreams each night lasting 5 to 20 minutes. So, during an average lifetime, we spend almost 6 years dreaming.

Lack of dreaming has recently been associated with many mental disorders but lot of work is yet to be done to understand how and what dreams does. So, until then stay healthy and keep on dreaming.
